ASHLEY COOK

Statement

I am a printmaker - a graduate of GSA, I worked there after graduating in 1986 until 1995.
Currently I produce my work at Glasgow Print Studio and I have a studio nearby at WASPS South Block. My work is narrative and emotionally driven. I’m a collagist working with found images which I combine with my own photographic & autographic elements which I reimagine into illusionistic environments made from disparate sources.
In recent years I have developed interests in Ogham and the Pagan Wheel of the Year; the annual cycle of festivals observing the chief solar events and cycles of the seasons. I’m drawn to thought processes which observe these cycles, bringing us into line with the natural world and ancient rhythms we find there. Our ancestors navigated by the stars and used the heavens for orientation, measuring time, and inspiration for their mythology and Godheads. Nature created the perfect place for us - for billions of years, it perfected what worked and eliminated what did not.
My current work speaks of earth energies, nature spirits and celestial influences. Remnants of a past where we lived through folklore, reading omens from nature and our everyday surroundings, living by small acts of everyday magic.
