Connelly McCaffrey - Untitled #14
Connelly and McCaffrey are artist collaborators working together to produce beautifully absurd collages combining motifs drawn from high fashion magazines with vintage landscapes.
Graduates of the Glasgow School of Art, each artist has an established individual practice: Connelly, a graduate of Environmental Art works in sculptural installation and painting, McCaffrey, a graduate of Product Design works in photography and print.
The collage submitted has been selected from a body of work made during an intensive week-long residency. The artists met to scour their personal collections of printed materials amassed over decades spanning their shared interests in fashion, travel and landscape. Travel guides scouted from second hand shops for their vintage print quality and texture juxtapose glossy fashion magazines at once throw away and records of their time. Garment fragments were excised from editorials to sit in landscapes foreign to the original photoshoot such that the fragments are reimagined both in scale and structure. Fabric drapes read sculpturally, folds and straps as supports of behemoth architectural constructions. The resulting image is at once ridiculous and seamless, jarring yet somehow sensible, humorous yet elegant.
The finished piece is an original and comprised of elements hand cut from the source material, precisely assembled as complete compositions and framed ready for display. The piece is also available as an accessibly priced digital print on photographic paper upon request. We hope this will allow us to share the work more broadly and increase the funds we can raise for the cause.
