Wallace Street Light
I was a car passenger stopped at the lights just near Bridge Street underground. The light was amazing and I managed to get a couple of reference photos before a car pulled up next to us and obscured the view. This painting was done over many sessions. I did an underdrawing in pencil and then reinforced in pen over my primed wooden panel. The whole image was painted entirely in black and then built up slowly with layers of glazes until I finally began applying thicker impasto paint. I feel like I’ve translated that hard Glaswegian winter light well. Despite being a post-industrial, rubbish-strewn spot I captured what I find so beautiful about Glasgow.
