The Arches, Glasgow
The Arches nightclub in Glasgow was a popular dance music spot and one of my favourite venues in Glasgow. I was looking to capture the mood of anticipation of a crowd waiting to enter the venue. The venue is contained within a railway arch and the surrounding environment is dark and dingy, however I remember the stark overhead light. This was a difficult image to paint as the venue no longer exists and there weren't many online images of its original form. The perspective was also difficult to work on. I made several site visits and positioned myself at various locations opposite to get the correct view. I painted the built environment first before deciding to add people which I assembled from various online images. I selected oils as my favourite medium and for their ability to add vibrant contrasts to this scene.
