White Sticks on the Baymouth Dunes, Prince Edward County, Ontario
This drawing is based on a visit to the Baymouth dunes in Ontario along the shores of Lake Ontario. I collected driftwood sticks as I walked along the dunes with small trees growing out of the sand. The development of towns and farms in the 18th/19th century caused extensive deforestation leading to soil erosion, which caused the sand dunes to expand and bury nearby roads and farmland. Vegetation was planted to stabilize the dunes by the end of the 19th century. Sandbanks Provincial Park was established to protect this unique dune ecosystem
