Statement
I am a landscape painter and crafter living at the foot of the Campsie Fells (“Crooked Fairy Hills” in Gaelic). I am largely self-taught as an artist though I've had many wonderful teachers along the way. I studied psychology and fascinated by folklore and the stories that connect us to the landscape and the people who have made their mark on it through time.
I use a variety of media in my work but paint mostly in oils, using big brushes and palette knives to create spontaneous, impressionistic marks, mixing colours on the canvas or intuitively laying them down to build a sense of the atmosphere of a place. I seek to understand perceptions of beauty in the landscape and our relationship with the man made structures some of which are held with nostalgia and affection while we shun others as inherently ugly. I have an interest in natural history and ecology and my work also features native wildlife as well as some close up conversations with trees.
