Statement

Julie Stephen

I am a printmaker, illustrator and art tutor, who studied fine art at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen, before embarking on an art and design teaching career.

I now run my visual arts business from home, utilising my creativity and life-long love of drawing to create a wealth of imagery, illustrations and prints.

The screen prints I have submitted signify the importance of creativity and art on our mental health and wellbeing after I researched the work of esteemed psychiatrist Dr W.A.F. Browne of the Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries and his groundbreaking occupational and art therapy practice during the 1800’s.

The ‘Neural Pathways’ screen prints include my own photographs from the Crichton grounds, where the local community are encouraged to walk through for their own health and wellbeing.

‘Brain Freeze’ screen printed in ice-cream pastel colours relates to the brain freeze I can struggle with as I approach menopause and how a dollop of ice-cream, whatever our age, gives us brain freeze.
