Carly’s sculpture is a richly textured piece created from a combination of organic and man-made materials. The work explores both tactile and visual contrasts, incorporating wool, wire, beads, and twine to build a sculptural form that is partly inspired by natural environments—particularly the forest floor and its patterns of growth and transformation.
To construct the piece, we developed an inventive process using a customized tool made from a wooden fork and pipe cleaners. This allowed her to drag strands of wool through PVA glue and manipulate the materials with increased control. She also threaded beads onto wire and created a beaded circle by carefully wrapping and intertwining wool and twine.
Carly brings a remarkable work ethic and enthusiasm to her art practice. Using adapted tools and processes designed to support her independence, she continues to explore creative techniques with determination and joy. Her preference for tactile materials with distinctive textures—and activities with clear, satisfying outcomes, like threading beads along wool or wire—reflects her thoughtful and sensory approach to art-making.
This project challenged Carly to work with materials in new and unfamiliar ways, and she embraced the opportunity with great focus and delight. The resulting sculpture is a testament to her innovation, persistence, and growing artistic confidence. It invites viewers to experience the work not only visually, but through a deeper appreciation of the material, process, and intention behind it.
