New York
Elizabeth’s mixed media artwork is inspired by the dynamic energy and atmosphere of New York City. She chose to focus on an urban street scene, captivated by a reference image where rain had created vivid reflections on the road surface. This striking visual element became a central focus of her composition.
The artwork was constructed using layered cardboard to form the structural elements of the cityscape. Paint was applied using sponges and a palette knife, techniques that helped to create a rich, tactile surface and a sense of texture throughout the piece. Elizabeth limited her colour palette to reflect the moody, reflective quality of the original image, emphasizing contrast and light.
To build the composition, she used perspective drawing techniques to lay out the illusion of depth—leading the viewer’s eye down the road and into the city beyond. This attention to spatial arrangement allowed her to create a stylized, immersive city scene with buildings and streets viewed from a front-facing perspective.
Elizabeth enjoys exploring a wide range of art media and continues to grow in confidence with each new project. This piece demonstrates her evolving skills, creative decision-making, and her keen interest in both structure and mood within urban environments.
