Wycinanki

Wycinanki, Painting
Wycinanki
Wycinanki is a Slavic adaptation of papercutting; a popular art form in Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. This painting of my niece hiding behind, while also showing off, her paper artwork cutout explores themes of tradition, culture and play. This painting places significance on the importance of art as a means of expression for children allowing them to communicate in new ways. Having been born in Poland moving to Scotland was an immense culture shock which is why I value various traditions and rituals being passed down to my niece from generation to generation, especially while she grows up in a country that is different to the one her parents were brought up in. Oil Paint on Canvas.
