What we leave behind
What we leave behind captures a scene of young children litter picking on Rosny Hill lookout against a backdrop of Hobart and Mt Wellington with its first dusting of snow in the distance.
The artwork is a subtle commentary on the respect we have for the natural world around us, and the impact that our actions have on the beauty of our home and future generations.
The contrast between the foreground and background is intended to be subtle, so that the juxtaposition can be easily overlooked. Most litter that washes up on our beach is of local origin, and yet we don’t think it has anything to do with us. While it’s easy to think of environmental damage and pollution as caused by someone else, and therefore someone else/business/government/ (insert other here)’s problem, this attitude means we are willingly leaving behind these issues for our children and grandchildren. Our lack of action and interest in the world that surrounds us sends the message that this is an acceptable state of affairs.
