This piece started for the purposes of material exploration. I wanted to okay with surface textures and relief. Drawing from my training in textiles, it was interesting to play with layering to create a sense of depth. Materials used are mainly; beads, broken jewellery, thin fabric, lengths of cord, patterned ribbon and acrylic paint. As I experimented with composition, the piece started to develop a personality and I began to develop around the theme of “dental horror” after a particularly traumatic visit to the dentist. Interested in how the same colour in various materials represented differently, the colours used are intentionally very dark, aside from the odd pop of white or red, putting the viewer in mind of blood or bone.
