Statement
Henry Kondracki RSA
I was born in Edinburgh in 1953 and left school age 15. I always wanted to paint and after many different work experiences went to London and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art (1981-1982) and the Slade School (1982-1986). I returned to Edinburgh in 1988 continuing to paint and some teaching at Glasgow and Edinburgh Art Colleges. I have exhibited mainly in London and Edinburgh but also New York, Los Angeles, Australia and Hong Kong.
Making any kind of statement about my work is difficult. My work is essentially a process of discovery, my aim is to venture into uncharted territory; to set out a plan for my journey would ruin the adventure. Back in 1992 I said that “I build bridges that are a synthesis of thought, memory, emotion, fact and fiction” and this is still the case, but ultimately paintings are for the viewer/audience to experience on their own terms and each viewer comes with their own synthesis of thought, memories, emotions, facts and fictions.
