Steff J. Murray

Statement

My name is Stephanie Murray. I’m a 32-year-old artist, art educator, and aspiring art therapist about to start Year 2 of my Art Psyhcotherapy MSc.

Art has been a constant in my life—an intuitive language I’ve spoken for as long as I can remember. It has always been more than just an outlet for creativity; I see it as a powerful force for healing and connection. This belief guided me into teaching art in 2020, and now into the field of art therapy, where the transformative potential of expression becomes even more profound.

While I’ve worked primarily in digital media, in recent years I’ve been reconnecting with traditional materials, especially acrylic and gouache, which allow for a more tactile and immersive experience. My work mostly centres around the human form with a dash of fantasy, often through the lens of dark surrealism - a genre that gives voice to the hidden, emotional undercurrents of the psyche. I find inspiration in the beauty of Renaissance masters, whose technical skill and depth of storytelling continue to influence my own approach.
