Ona Dubakaite

Statement

Ona was born in 1993 in Vilnius, Lithuania. Growing up in a post-Soviet country, she experienced a world shaped by transition, silence, and surreal contradiction—a world often overlooked or misunderstood by Western audiences. Her work reflects this complex cultural inheritance, blending elements of graphic art, found imagery, and drawing to explore memory, absurdity, and the personal mythologies embedded in collective history. Ona has exhibited in both solo and group shows, particularly within alternative and university art circles, where her distinctive voice has drawn strong recognition.Currently, Ona is focused on collage and mixed media, working primarily with vintage Soviet magazines inherited from her grandmother. Through these materials, she conjures ghostly figures, awkward monsters, and dreamlike domestic scenes that blur the line between past and present, real and imagined. Her imagery is intimate but unsettling—familiar spaces distorted by strange characters and quiet chaos. With a diploma in Ceramics and Graphic Art from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Ona continues to investigate themes of identity, inherited trauma, and the absurd theater of everyday life. Her art invites viewers to peer into a strange mirror—one that reflects a reality both deeply personal and universally uncanny.
