Stan pursued a career as an engineer having started as an apprentice structural draughtsman in the days of drawing boards, pencils and pens but was always interested in recreational drawing and painting since attending art classes at school. He started exhibiting and selling his work after joining a local art group about twenty or so years ago. Now retired from engineering he works as a full time artist from his home studio on the south side of Glasgow. Stan says "I would be described as 'self-taught' but over the years I have attended many excellent artist demonstrations and much of what I practise now I have learned from these demonstrations, the use of materials, composition, colour etc.. I have sketched and painted in various media over the years including pastels and watercolour but I now use mainly acrylics on canvas. The basis of my paintings is mainly in the form of landscapes but usually with a figurative element such as a few sheep or coos, which I find can be a lot of fun. I think it would be fair to say that there is a bit of technical drawing in some of my artwork as the two sides of my brain wrestle with the shapes on the canvas - but that's partly what I find makes it interesting!"
